Faces of Disc Golf - The Disc Golf Barber

Who are you?

I am Jan Magnus, a 38-year-old entrepreneur and barber. I might be best known for my personal brand, Disc Golf Barber. Through that, I am also known for cutting the hair of world-class athletes both in Finland and abroad. I am also, like many others these days, a podcast host. Together with my good friend Mikko Hakulinen, we host a podcast called Mulligan Men. I love the authenticity, clarity, and consistency of the show.

What's disc golf to you?

For me, disc golf is a sport of relaxation and personal growth. I enjoy being able to grab my bag and head out for a walk in the woods, or challenge myself by competing against others and testing how strong my mental control is. I love seeing whether I can solve problems during a tournament while constantly under pressure, like being in a pressure cooker.

-

Forehand or Backhand?

Always backhand, because that’s how I started and it’s definitely my stronger throw. In the beginning, forehand caused some pain in my hand, and as a barber, I can’t risk injuring it — it would make my work extremely difficult. I really enjoy throwing understable shots with stable or understable discs. The glide you get from them looks absolutely amazing.

Favorite disc golf course?

My favorite disc golf course is definitely Kyläsaari, because it’s the place where I’ve probably grown the most, both as a player and personally. I’ve played it over 200 times. I love the fact that no round there is ever truly “free.” You can shoot under par, or you can just as easily end up double over par. It always makes me laugh when someone says Kyläsaari is too easy — and then I watch them completely struggle through the front nine.

Favorite item in your bag?

My favorite thing in my disc golf bag? It has to be a smile. Every time I throw my bag on my back, it usually brings a smile to my face because I get to do something I love. Sometimes that smile might be missing at first, but without fail, it always finds its way back during the round. So my answer is: a smile.

Shoutouts?

I definitely want to give a shoutout to all of us regular mortals rated under 900. We’re the ones who often get overlooked, while all the focus goes to the top players. But we are the people who watch the live broadcasts, watch the post-produced coverage, buy the signature discs, get a new bag every year, and invest in disc golf shoes and apparel. We are the backbone of the sport. This shoutout is for all of us.
